Patisserie Arrangement

Patisserie Arrangement

Food blogging seems to be such a now thing, no matter where you look there are pictures of restaurant dishes, homemade experiments, drinks and desserts. Some simply shot with a camera phone and some with a full studio setup, either way the interest seems striking. After having a chat with a London based patisserie creator and distributor the idea to help develop the media side of the business was to good to turn down and so I was presented with a small selection of mini pies and tarts to start.
With this shot I had the idea of dark slate which would emphasis the vibrant colours of the food while giving a elegant finish to the surroundings, A quick trip to my local DIY store and for under £6 I managed to pick up a few tiles. I used f/5.6 and focused on 5 different areas and then used the stacking method to combine the shots, once in Camera RAW I could edit and adjust the shot to how I wanted it to look... I don't think I have ever been more tempted to test the merchandise, my stomach was rumbling, mouth watering more and more the longer the shoot went on!

The idea with these individual product shots was simplicity, again I purchased a single porcalin matt marble tile and using basic ingredients to advertise the flavour of the tarts. There are small decorative products that you can easily find which will help add to the photos like freeze dried strawberry pieces and candy hearts. Using f/2.8 I was really able to get that infinity look which helps direct the eye to the product on show and seeing as I do not yet possess a macro lens which would have produced better results, the 85mm seemed to do a good enough job.

For the lighting I used 2 softboxes, one directly behind and the other at 4 o'clock in a raised position. I also used 1 main fill light to the left diffused with a couple of layers of tracing paper, while a simple silver reflector card could be placed in any position that needed a slight boost of light. One thing to note is to keep the treats in the fridge and photograph them individually as the first one I tried slowly started melting and the base sunk a bit due to the heat of the lights.
